Let’s hear it for good mental health!

It’s May, which means it’s Mental Health Awareness month.  In a year where we’ve been locked in and locked down more often than not, it’s important to check in and see how we’re all doing.

What we’ve been through is no small thing. The heightened fear and anxiety, the threat to livelihoods and of course the illness and deaths around us that many of us have experienced.

As human beings, we are wonderful survivors which means it’s all too easy to simply dust ourselves off and just carry on, without processing what’s happened to us and how it’s really affected us.

Most of us have to keep going with our lives, often with barely a moment to take stock of the many out-of-the-ordinary events that are impacting us every day. But we have all been living in a prolonged state of crisis, which means we’ve all experienced shock, trauma and grief, even if it’s from watching too many news reports. And that takes its toll.

So take a moment just to check-in, just for an honest moment and ask yourself “How am I doing, really?”  We need to acknowledge what’s happened, express anything that’s been hard, release as much as we can. We don’t need to dwell but we do need to deal.

A few things we can all consider doing…..
  • Make time for ourselves  – Do things we love. Be mindful as we do everyday things. Make time to relax where we actually switch off.
  • Foster healthy habits – create a supportive routine for eating, sleeping, exercising; make time for fun; declutter. Lessen screen time.
  • Define our stress – Am I under or over stimulated? Where is it noticeable – internally or externally? How is it affecting me/others?
  • Whatever you notice, when you do your internal review, just notice it. Don’t overthink it. Just name it, so that you can come back to it later.
Some good mental health tools make all the difference

There are some very effective therapeutic tools available (such as EFT / NLP / Hypnotherapy) to help all of us clear and shift the remnants of what we’ve experienced during the pandemic (and, to a large degree, are still experiencing).

It’s up to every one of us to help steer this ship through our current troubled waters.

This means upping our awareness of our own stress and increasing our willingness to name it and deal with it.
So, it doesn’t really matter which month it is, it’s always a good time to take stock of our own mental health and well-being.
